Construite vers 1398 sous la forme d’une tour fortifiée, la Porte Saint-Martin constituait l’une des entrées de la ville. Fermée sous Louis XIV, elle fut alors transformée en boulangerie militaire avant d’être rouverte au XXe siècle. Aujourd’hui, elle apparaît comme une simple brèche dans le rempart.
En 2013, un vaste chantier de restauration a révélé les vestiges d’une ancienne tour en grès datant du XIVe siècle et d’un pont-levis, symboles de la ville fortifiée. La rénovation a également mis en valeur deux salles voûtées de contregarde, intégrées au rempart et transformées en salle d’interprétation.
Un film explicatif, disponible en français et en anglais, y retrace l’histoire du Quesnoy, de sa fondation à sa libération par les troupes néo-zélandaises. Accessible d’avril à fin septembre, cet espace invite chacun à pénétrer au cœur de la porte et à plonger dans l’histoire fascinante de la ville et de ses fortifications.
Built around 1398 in the form of a fortified tower, the Saint-Martin Gate was one of the entrances to the town. Closed under Louis XIV, it was then transformed into a military bakery before being reopened in the 20th century. Today, it appears as a simple breach in the rampart.
In 2013, a major restoration project revealed the remains of an old sandstone tower dating from the 14th century and a drawbridge, both symbols of the fortified town. The renovation also highlighted two vaulted counterguard chambers integrated into the rampart and converted into an interpretation room.

De Saint-Martinpoort werd rond 1398 gebouwd in de vorm van een versterkte toren en vormde één van de toegangen tot de stad. Onder Louis XIV werd de poort gesloten en vervolgens omgevormd tot een militaire bakkerij, voordat zij in de 20e eeuw opnieuw werd geopend. Vandaag verschijnt zij als een eenvoudige opening in de vestingmuur.
In 2013 bracht een grootschalig restauratieproject de resten aan het licht van een oude zandstenen toren uit de 14e eeuw en van een ophaalbrug, symbolen van de vestingstad. De renovatie zette ook twee gewelfde ruimtes van de contregarde in de kijker, geïntegreerd in de vestingmuur en ingericht als interpretatieruimte.
