Dernière porte intacte de la ville fortifiée, cette porte, remaniée en 1887, remplace une porte voûtée datant de 1769, ornée d’un fronton triangulaire et devenue trop étroite pour le passage des convois d’artillerie. Autrefois, elle ouvrait l’accès aux routes menant à Landrecies et à la forêt de Mormal. Protégée par un ouvrage à cornes, elle est la seule porte du Quesnoy à avoir échappé aux destructions de 1940. Un élégant pont de briques enjambe le large fossé, appelé l’Étang Vauban.
De l’autre côté de la porte, l’ancien corps de garde a successivement abrité des bains-douches et servi de dépôt pour le service des fêtes de la ville, avant de devenir la Maison du Tourisme, qui offre aujourd’hui un point d’accueil aux visiteurs.
The last intact gate of the fortified town, this gate, redesigned in 1887, replaced a vaulted gate dating from 1769, decorated with a triangular pediment and considered too narrow for the passage of artillery convoys. In the past, it provided access to the roads leading to Landrecies and the Forest of Mormal. Protected by a hornwork, it is the only gate of Le Quesnoy to have escaped the destruction of 1940. An elegant brick bridge spans the wide moat known as the “Vauban Pond”.
On the other side of the gate, the former guardhouse successively housed public baths and showers, then served as a storage building for the town’s events department, before becoming the Tourist Office, which today provides a welcome point for visitors.
Deze poort, de laatste intacte poort van de vestingstad, werd in 1887 verbouwd en verving een gewelfde poort uit 1769, versierd met een driehoekig fronton en te smal geworden voor het vervoer van artilleriekonvooien. Vroeger gaf zij toegang tot de wegen richting Landrecies en het Forest of Mormal. Beschermd door een hoornwerk is dit de enige poort van Le Quesnoy die ontsnapte aan de verwoestingen van 1940.
