Érigé sous Louis XIV sur un ouvrage construit par Charles Quint 130 ans plus tôt, le Bastion Impérial est un exemple remarquable d’architecture militaire classique. Sa forme convexe et ses orillons, protégeaient autrefois les défenseurs du flanc concave, côté courtine, tandis que les boutisses disposées en quinconce dans le mur de briques renforçaient la solidité de la maçonnerie.
Entouré par le Lac Vauban. qui s’étend jusqu’au flanc gauche du Bastion Vert en passant par la Porte Fauroeulx, le bastion offre un panorama unique sur les fortifications et l’histoire de la ville. Aujourd’hui, il est également un lieu où l’on pratique la slackline, un sport proche du funambulisme.
Built under Louis XIV on a structure originally constructed by Charles V 130 years earlier, the Imperial Bastion is a remarkable example of classical military architecture. Its convex shape and orillons once protected the defenders positioned on the concave flank along the curtain wall, while the staggered boutisses embedded in the brick wall reinforced the strength of the masonry.
Surrounded by the Vauban Lake, which stretches as far as the left flank of the Green Bastion by way of the Fauroeulx Gate, the bastion offers a unique panorama over the fortifications and the history of the town.
Today, it is also a place where slacklining, a sport similar to tightrope walking, is practised.
Het Keizerlijk Bastion werd onder Louis XIV gebouwd op een verdedigingswerk dat 130 jaar eerder door Charles V was opgericht. Het vormt een opmerkelijk voorbeeld van klassieke militaire architectuur. De bolvormige structuur en de orillons beschermden vroeger de verdedigers op de holle flank langs de courtine, terwijl de in verspringend patroon geplaatste boutisses in de bakstenen muur de stevigheid van het metselwerk versterkten.
Omringd door het Vaubanmeer, dat zich uitstrekt tot aan de linkerflank van het Groene Bastion via de Fauroeulxpoort, biedt het bastion een uniek uitzicht op de vestingwerken en de geschiedenis van de stad.
Vandaag is het ook een plek waar slackline wordt beoefend, een sport die verwant is aan koorddansen.
